Comfrey Root Cuttings - Planting and Care 🌿

🌱 How to Plant Your Comfrey Root Cuttings

  1. Timing

    • Plant in spring after your last frost through fall with 6+ weeks before first frost.

    • Store in a cool, dark place if you can’t plant immediately. Keep roots moist (not soggy) until then.

  2. Location

    • Full sun to partial shade.

    • Choose a permanent spot—comfrey develops deep roots and is very hard to move later.

    • Great along fence lines, compost piles, orchards, or as a chop-and-drop mulch companion.

  3. Planting Depth & Orientation

    • Dig a hole 2–3 inches deep (5–8 cm).

    • Place the cutting horizontally, with any visible buds facing up if you can identify them—but don’t stress; comfrey is forgiving.

    • Cover loosely with soil and water thoroughly.

  4. Spacing

    • Leave 2–3 feet between cuttings. These plants get big!

💧 Aftercare & Growth Timeline

  • Water regularly during the first 4–6 weeks to keep soil moist (but not soggy).

  • Sprouting typically occurs in 2–6 weeks, depending on temperature and soil conditions.

Be patient—comfrey grows slowly at first but will take off once established.
