The Tulip Poplar (also known as Tuliptree or Yellow Poplar) is one of the tallest native hardwoods in the Eastern U.S., prized for its fast growth, striking flowers, and towering presence. Despite its name, it’s not a true poplar—it’s actually in the magnolia family!

In late spring, this tree produces large, tulip-shaped yellow-green flowers with orange bands that provide a critical nectar source for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Its distinctive leaves, straight trunk, and golden fall color make it a standout in any landscape.

Latin Name: Liriodendron tulipifera

Size at Maturity: 70–100 ft tall, 30–50 ft wide

USDA Zone: 4–9

Site & Soil: Prefers deep, moist, well-drained soil in full sun. Will tolerate clay and poorer soils once established but grows best in rich loam.

Pests & Diseases: Generally pest-resistant; may attract aphids or scale, especially when young, but damage is usually cosmetic

🌼 Uses:

  • Stunning spring flowers support early pollinators

  • Fast-growing—excellent for shade, reforestation, or large landscapes

  • Provides habitat for birds and other wildlife

🛠 Growing Tips:

  • Plant in a location where it has room to grow tall—this is a tree that wants to soar

  • Water regularly during the first year for best establishment

  • Mulch to retain moisture and protect roots from temperature extremes

💡 Fun Fact:
Tulip Poplars can grow over 100 feet tall and were once used to make dugout canoes by Indigenous peoples due to their tall, straight trunks and soft, workable wood.
