Elecampane is one of those plants that pulls triple duty without asking for much in return. The deep, aromatic roots have been used across Western, Ayurvedic, and Traditional Chinese medicine traditions for centuries, primarily as a respiratory herb for stubborn coughs, bronchitis, and lung congestion, but also as an antimicrobial, digestive bitter, and prebiotic (the roots are rich in inulin). Medicinally, roots aren't ready until year two, so plant it, let it settle, and let it work. Above ground it's equally purposeful: six-foot stalks topped with shaggy golden flowers that feed pollinators all summer, and enormous leaves that make some of the best chop-and-drop mulch in the garden. Deep taproot breaks compacted soil and mines nutrients from lower layers, a genuine food forest workhorse.

Zone 8 note: Elecampane is cold-hardy to Zone 3 and native to Europe, so it appreciates afternoon shade and consistent moisture through our summers. Site it right and it thrives here in North Georgia.
