The Nyírségi Black Locust is a special selection of the native Black Locust, originally developed in Eastern Europe for superior timber, uniform form, and fast growth. Unlike wild black locust, which can have twisted or multi-trunked growth, this variety was selected for its straight, upright trunk and consistent wood quality, making it ideal for sustainable forestry, coppicing, and homestead use.

It’s a nitrogen-fixing pioneer tree, perfect for permaculture systems, windbreaks, or erosion control. And like all black locust, it produces fragrant, pollinator-friendly flowers and incredibly rot-resistant wood.

Latin Name: Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Nyírségi’
Size at Maturity: 40–60 ft tall, 20–35 ft wide
USDA Zone: 3–9
Site & Soil: Adapts to poor, dry, compacted, or rocky soils; thrives in full sun; drought-tolerant once established
Pests & Diseases: Resilient and hardy; low maintenance; may attract locust borers in some regions but withstands damage well

🌼 Uses:
Straight-growing variety ideal for timber, firewood, posts, and poles
Fixes nitrogen, enriching the soil for other plants
Fragrant white flowers attract bees and pollinators in spring
Tolerates harsh conditions—ideal for reforestation, mine reclamation, or degraded land

🛠 Growing Tips:
Space well for timber production or plant densely for coppice systems
Suckers can be managed or harnessed for rapid re-growth
Coppice on a 5–7 year cycle for poles or firewood

💡 Fun Fact:
The Nyírségi variety was bred for European forestry programs seeking fast-growing, straight-trunked, sustainable hardwood—bringing timber-grade potential to a tough, native tree.
