Most people are familiar with the introduced European St. John's Wort (H. perforatum) โ€” dotted St. John's Wort is its native North American counterpart. The telltale difference is in the spots: black dots and streaks marking both the flower petals and the leaves, giving the whole plant a delicate, detailed quality that's genuinely pretty up close. Tight clusters of yellow flowers bloom from midsummer into early fall on upright, multi-stemmed plants reaching 1โ€“2ยฝ feet tall. Bumblebees and sweat bees work the pollen-rich flowers heavily โ€” it carries a Xerces Society special value designation for bumble bees โ€” and it serves as a larval host for the Gray Hairstreak butterfly and Gray Half-Spot moth. It adapts to woodland edges, prairie margins, meadows, and streambanks, handles a range of soil conditions, and spreads gently by short rhizomes to form tidy colonies over time. Deer leave it alone.
