Pennyroyal | Mentha pulegium
Pennyroyal is one of the oldest herbs in cultivation — used across European, North African, and Middle Eastern traditions for centuries — and one of the most aromatic. The low, creeping stems release an intense spearmint-forward fragrance when brushed or walked on, making it a classic choice for path edges, stepping stone gaps, and groundcover in moist, part-shade spots where foot traffic releases that scent. Dense mats of dark green leaves spread readily by rooting stems, whorls of tiny lilac-blue flowers appear in midsummer, and bees work those flowers consistently. It's deer and rabbit resistant, suppresses weeds effectively, and handles a range of soils from average to moist. A beautiful, fragrant, low-maintenance groundcover with a long history — and one that requires honest handling.
Important safety information: Pennyroyal contains pulegone, a compound that is toxic to the liver and kidneys when ingested, even in small amounts. It is a known abortifacient and should never be handled or consumed by pregnant women. The essential oil is especially dangerous and should never be taken internally. This plant is sold as an ornamental and groundcover — not for internal use. Keep away from children and pets.
