American Skullcap | Scutellaria lateriflora
Skullcap is a graceful native perennial that tucks beautifully into shaded corners of the food forest or herbal garden, producing delicate spikes of violet-blue flowers along its stems throughout summer. One of the most valued herbs in the North American botanical tradition, Skullcap has been used for centuries to support the nervous system. It asks for very little in return: a bit of shade, consistent moisture, and room to spread into gentle colonies over time. In woodland gardens it feels completely at home, naturalizing alongside ferns, spicebush, and other native understory companions.
